ALICE'S LOOKING GLASS

Glass is a transformative, magical canvas that artists have found irresistible today and in ages past. Sand, when heated, melts and changes composition to reveal myriad reflections of light and color. Alice Husak travels artistically through the glass medium, and images emerge and shift with exposure to light. Painting in reverse, she creates an image on one side of the glass and views the completed scene from the other side. Layers of paint are applied with the details first and the background as the final component.

To explore the aesthetic of motion in two dimensions, Husak custom mixes kinechromatic pigments with enamels. This mixture exhibits spectral reflectance to light and color-shifting within the angle of view. The surface of the glass lends depth to the pigments, causing elements to appear to change color or to appear/disappear with changes in the angle of viewing and illumination.

For Husak, working in reverse with such an inspiring medium is an exciting journey of perpetual discovery, and she invites you to join her on this evolving adventure through the looking glass.
