Canan Boomer

PAINTING + HANDBAGS

Canan (pronounced Jah-nun) Boomer was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and was reared and educated in Frankfurt, Germany. She spent most of her youth in Germany and France where her studies and travels led to a deep appreciation of the arts. Canan’s love for the arts and language of other cultures drew her back to painting when her children left home for college.

Canan says it’s difficult to describe why she paints: “I have this tiny person inside me that wants to come out and create all sorts of colors and shapes. I love to paint with oils, because of the consistency of the material, and watercolor, because of the unpredictability of it. My ideal painting is one with a simple and fresh approach that gives the viewer the impression of the subject. It is my goal is to create paintings that enrich and nurture the soul.”

In recent years, Canan has exhibited at Shockoe Bottom Art Center, Uptown Gallery, Tuckahoe Library, Petersburg Art Center, and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Canan’s work is on permanent display at Crossroads Art Center.
