With a dedication to presenting quality artwork in a variety of media, Crossroads Art Center maintains an exciting schedule of exhibitions and events open to local, regional, and national artists. Exhibiting artists can expect a high standard of professional representation at Crossroads. Crossroads features new exhibitions every other month, along with a juried all-media show and a members’ show.

CROSSROADS JURIED ALL-MEDIA SHOW

Crossroads’ all-media shows are open to mid-Atlantic artists through a bimonthly Call for Entries, and cash prizes are awarded for the winners. Each show is juried by a prominent arts professional from the community (a gallery director, curator, museum official, arts professor, or accomplished artist). Commission on sales is 30%. Entry fees for the general public are $36 for 3 pieces ($12 each) and $27 for 3 pieces for Crossroads gallery members.

EXHIBITIONS BY ARTIST PROPOSAL

Crossroads Art Center encourages artists and groups working in various media to submit proposals for exhibitions. The exhibition committee and exhibitions director review proposals every two to three months as they are received. Artists are selected based on overall quality, innovation, and thoroughness of the proposal. Exhibitions are scheduled two to three years in advance.

An exhibition proposal must consist of two parts: 1) a complete proposal package, including exhibition application, and 2) an in-person review of the proposed work. There is a $25 exhibition application fee which is applicable toward the exhibition fee if the proposal is accepted. Artists will be notified by phone or email after the jury process is complete. All artwork in a featured exhibition must be for sale or an additional $200 fee will be applied.

EXHIBITION APPLICATION

GALLERY-INITIATED SOLO AND GROUP EXHIBITIONS

The Crossroads Art Center's exhibitions director curates solo or thematic group exhibitions resulting from digital image submissions, gallery and studio visits, online research, attendance at lectures and similar events, university art department visits, and peer recommendations.

CURATOR-ORGANIZED THEMATIC GROUP EXHIBITIONS

Curators may submit proposals for thematic group exhibitions that explore an idea in-depth. Crossroads Art Center recommends that one individual serves as the project organizer (curator/artist/writer). This individual should not be one of the proposed exhibiting artists. Artistic quality, depth of research, budget feasibility, attention to administrative detail, and overall professionalism of the proposal are deciding factors in selection. Submissions should include an exhibition goal statement, a listing of artists with résumés and slides or videos of current work, curatorial experience of project organizer (résumé or curriculum vitae), comprehensive budget, outline of project needs, and a self-addressed stamped envelope with protective cardboard and sufficient postage to cover return of submission. All artwork in a featured exhibition must be for sale or an additional $200 fee will be applied.

Crossroads’ exhibitions director will review curatorial submissions and respond via letter or telephone. Consideration of submissions is ongoing. Applicants should be aware than that exhibitions are scheduled two to three years in advance. For more information on submitting a curatorial proposal, submit a contact form or call 804.278.8950.

TRAVELING OR SHARED EXHIBITIONS

Crossroads Art Center also presents traveling or shared exhibitions organized by other institutions. One example is the Paper Cutters Guild of North America. In its traveling schedule, the guild was able to host a show in Gallery One. Other collaborations include co-organized exhibitions with other arts institutions and artist residencies in schools or the community.
