George Heath

PHOTOGRAPHY + PAINTING

George Heath is inspired by the works of George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, and John Sloan. Like artists from the Ash Can School, Mr. Heath paints in a limited color palette with bold colors and explores light/dark contrasts within the picture plane. His subject matter explores old neighborhoods, sheds, and houses. This results from spending time walking and photographing, searching for the right light at a particular moment. When experimenting with abstract expressionism, Mr. Heath embraces rich paint surfaces and emotional brush work.

Mr. Heath is a native of Vienna, Virginia, where he first learned color theory and the principles of painting in high school art classes. He recalls being inspired by other talented students. He came to Richmond in 1972 to study art at Virginia Commonwealth University. He left school to enter the apprentice program at a local bank and has been working as an operating engineer in the data center for 32 years. He is looking forward to retiring and being able to paint full-time. Since 2009, he has been a student of Christaphora Robeers and has been represented by Crossroads Art Center. His work has been accepted into many juried shows in central Virginia, and he has won several awards, most recently 3rd prize for his painting Storm over Lakeside.
