Some artists talk of the fear of the blank white surface but Gloria Callahan finds an excitement in it. The white of the surface enables her to create lovely translucent layers of colored pencil to lend shape, color and form to nature’s beauty. The slow methodical process of over 20 layers gives her a Zen like feeling when creating a painting. Gloria says discovering and falling in love with the control, detail, and realism that can be achieved with colored pencil satisfies her creative hunger.
She uses artist-grade lightfast archival pigmented pencils to produce fine art paintings on hardboard panels, which are varnished and framed like fine art paintings. Because of this archival finishing and her style, Gloria’s colored pencil paintings have been said to resemble oil or acrylic paintings.
Gloria is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, having shown her work in three of its International shows. Her work has been published in the North Light Book, Strokes of Genius Vol. 6, and various other publications, such as Colored Pencil Magazine. Exhibiting in juried shows at the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and Salmagundi Club in New York, and at various galleries in Virginia, Massachusetts, Georgia, Washington, California, and D.C.
Gloria is one of very few colored pencil artists who work en plein air to create finished paintings on location. This love of direct observation informs her sense of color as well as an infatuation with light. She also paints in water-miscible oils when speed is necessary to capture a moment or scene for later study.
