Jack Richardson

PAINTING

John A. (Jack) Richardson was born in Washington, DC, a year before the end of WWII. The family subsequently moved to Southern Maryland where Jack spent his formative years, most impressed by his four years working on a tobacco farm.

At the age of 20 he enrolled in the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, where he studied for two years and was highly influenced in the use of classical methods and mediums by William Woodward, his first painting teacher. Feeling the need to get away from family influences, he enrolled in classes at the  Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he spent the next 5 years, was awarded full scholarship to Aspen School of Contemporary Art, earned a certificate of completion, and was awarded a Scheidt Scholarship for travel and study in Europe.

Upon his return, he worked at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Department of Education teaching children and adults, also, with a friend, he opened an art supply in downtown Philadelphia which he operated for 14 years .During this time he kept an active studio life, drawing from the figure, painting, and participating in local shows. Feeling the need for a more rural setting. he sold out to his partner and moved to Kent County, Maryland, in 1986 and has been painting on a regular basis and showing his work in the mid-Atlantic region. He now resides in Onancock, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where he has a studio gallery. He and his wife, Christine, are looking forward to relocating to Richmond, Virginia.
