Joel Moses has established a national reputation and market for his work in Raku Pottery. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1977 and was soon recognized for his achievements. Upon graduation he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant to participate in an artist-in-industry fellowship at Kohler Industries in Wisconsin. His work has been included in major museum and gallery shows, including the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. A description of his techniques is featured in The Container Book by Thelma Newman (Crown Press). Joel’s approach to Raku earned his participation in a major exhibition, “Japan and the West,” at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. His work is included in numerous private and corporate collections here and abroad.
Joel designs large architectural work as well as wheel-thrown Raku pieces. He has installed sizable wall units in Richmond and New York. He has taught in several states and has also developed and managed studio complexes.
Reflecting on his work, the artist feels that it reveals his appreciation of classical oriental pottery and images from ancient cultures. The crispness of the graphic design is mated well to the spontaneous “happening” of the Raku process. Joel’s works have been described as architectonic, simultaneously curved and angular. His work appears to change form as the design entices one into new areas of concentration.
