For the past eight or nine years, Judith Anderson has focused a large portion of her painting energies on train images. Trains attract her for several reasons: the abstract, geometric quality of the train cars themselves, viewed broadside; the amazing textures and layers of the cars’ peeling and rusted surfaces; the extraordinary graffiti left by other artists using the car exteriors as canvases; and the numerous layers of paint and graffiti interacting as both age. This interest has resulted not only in paintings, but also in photographs: close-ups of the surfaces and graffiti. Each year the fascination evolves. “I haven’t tired of trains and train surfaces yet,” she says.”
