Kathrine Thomson

POTTERY + JEWELRY

Kathrine Thomson began making jewelry several years after retiring from practicing pharmacy, at first working with silver metal clay (PMC) and then creating original designs from silver chain mail, wire embroidery and beadwork.

She took her first pottery course a few years before beginning to make jewelry, and since then has taken great joy in the challenges and rewards of both wheel-throwing and hand-building, creating functional pieces that are decorative and decorative pieces that fulfill their function by eliciting responses — positive or negative — from the visual and tactile stimulation of the observer. She is fascinated by what seems to be the limitless outcomes of working with clay, from manipulating the raw material to the final result of altering by glazing and firing, and more importantly, how to lend her personal interpretation to these processes. She wholeheartedly subscribes to the philosophy of well known American potter Cynthia Bringle:  "If you don't make what's in your soul, then why in the world are you doing this?"
