Fall 2019 Painting Classes with Curney Nuffer

Mondays, October 7–December 2  |  1:00–4:00 p.m.

Tuesdays, October 8–December 3  |  10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

No classes during the week of November 25–26

Beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels are welcome. Classes are primarily focused on oil painting, but Curney welcomes artists who work in acrylic and watercolor. The use of oil paint — from brushes and canvases to palette and technique — is the emphasis in these classes. Curney will demonstrate how the use of a limited palette emphasizes the importance of color, value, intensity, and placement of paint. Composition and the use of photos versus using still-life setups and plein air landscapes will be discussed. Demos and exercises are combined with painting time, or artists have the option to paint on their own with help from Curney throughout the class.

Realistic Watercolor Via Transparent Washes with J.M. Littleton

Saturday, November 23  |  10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Have you wondered how a realistic watercolor artist creates atmospheric perspective? Do you desire to learn how to layer washes to create more realistic and intense colors and values? J. M. Littleton will reveal her process of how she begins with a preliminary drawing and light washes to develop realistic images. Students will enjoy learning these concepts through discussion and demonstration and will practice executing flat and gradated washes. In addition, students will learn the meaning and uses of color theory to enhance the depth of field in their paintings. Participants will bring in images (with a strong light source) of subject matter that interests them to develop a painting.

Objectives:

  1. Students will know how to select an appropriate image and composition.
  2. Students will be able to complete a line drawing and transfer it onto the watercolor paper.
  3. Students will know how to execute a flat wash with a flat and round brush.
  4. Students will know how to create light and dark values through the use of tints and complimentary colors.
  5. Students will know the meaning and uses of color theory.
  6. Students will enjoy creating transparent washes to create a realistic watercolor.

Though Ms. Littleton focuses on wildlife painting in her own work, the realistic techniques she teaches are applicable for all subject matter, including still life, landscape, figure, portrait, and marine painting. Ms. Littleton completed the MAT program at MICA, is a college professor, has won awards at International watercolor exhibitions, offers workshops nationally, has exhibited with the AWS and NWS, and owns Littleton School of Art in Towson, MD.

Fee: $120 per student. Supply list: Will be provided. For beginning/intermediate level watercolor students. Minimum number of students: 4. Maximum number of students: Prefer a maximum of 12 so students get more individual attention.
