Vera Dickerson, AWS, NWS, SWS, VWS, MAWC

MIXED MEDIA PAINTING + WATERCOLOR

Vera M. Dickerson, a native Virginia artist, has always known that drawing and painting brings her joy. She followed that calling by graduating from American University with an MFA in painting and American art history. She has taught studio arts at university level, then founded The Studio School in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1990. Vera continues to direct and teach at this nonprofit art school in Roanoke, Virginia.

She has been recognized with entries in Who’s Who in American Art since 1986, Who’s Who in American Women, and Who’s Who in the South and Southeast. Vera also gained signature status in the American Watercolor Society in 2004 and the National Watercolor Society in 2001. She has served twice as president of the Virginia Watercolor Society.

While many areas of art and types of media interest Vera, she especially enjoys the versatility, permanence, and quick drying of acrylics, which allows for the many layers of paint found in her work. This build-up of layers creates luminous color and intense richness. Artist-created collage papers with acrylics, stencils, and stamps also add color, pattern, and visual texture.

Figure work is also true love of the artist, but the characteristics of people can be transferred to animals to express humor in a universal way. Chickens don’t care what Vera has them do, so just enjoy the fun.
